# Schopenhauer, Compassion, Suicide Pact Schopenhauer argued that morality is based on compassion. Which means the perception that the innermost essence of the world is suffering. So one feels suffering of others as one's own. I was curious about suicide pacts today. Because I read a fictional work containing a suicide pact. So I searched about them. I found that if people with suicidal tendencies help each other to live but fail, they lose last hope. Then they eventually start to say "Let's die together". They help each other as they have been doing. But to kill themselves at this time. This suicide planning makes death more meaningful and less fearful. Finally they commit a suicide pact. Of course the two have only family resemblance. Schopenhauer's solutions were strict asceticism and arts. Rather than encouraging each other to live. He argued that we should get rid of the will to live. But not suicide. Because he believed in reincarnation. But I find this family resemblance quite interesting.
